The difference between humans, on the one hand, and robots and animals, on the other, is that a person can see themselves in the future. A person always acts from the present toward the future, based on the experience of the past. The future state (“sitting in a cool car,” “I am a sales manager and proud of it,” and so on) is the motive that drives us to plan and make efforts. It is important that this future is grasped by the person in their present. We find this difficult to understand—our language has no perfect tenses. And yet, regardless of this, we act precisely in this way. This needs to be said from the very beginning, because, as we will see, many economic theories ignore time and present us with some flat picture, a cross-section of a process that in reality unfolds over time. Following the theories, this is done by experts, journalists, and politicians, and the confusion is extraordinary.
